Does IINA play Dolby Vision?
IINA is one of the nicest free players on the Mac. Dolby Vision is where people get stuck, and most of the answers online are scattered across bug reports.

Search for “IINA Dolby Vision” and you mostly find GitHub issues and forum threads, not a clear answer. Here is the state of things, with sources, and what to do if your Dolby Vision files look wrong.
What IINA says it does
IINA describes itself as a Mac-native interface built on mpv: trackpad gestures, Picture in Picture, Live Text, plugins and no telemetry. Its website does not mention HDR or Dolby Vision. That does not mean every Dolby Vision file fails, but it does mean Dolby Vision is not something IINA promises.
Where the picture really comes from
IINA hands decoding and rendering to mpv. mpv’s newer renderer, gpu-next, uses libplacebo, which documents Dolby Vision support including Profile 5 reshaping of the base layer. Whether you benefit from that inside IINA depends on the renderer and options in use, and mpv users have reported gpu-next failing to start on macOS (mpv issue 12993). In practice, results vary by version and setup, which is why the question keeps coming up.
Why Profile 5 is the problem
Dolby Vision Profile 5 has no HDR10 or SDR picture to fall back to. Its colours only come out right after the player applies the film’s reshaping data frame by frame. Without it you get green and magenta. Profile 8.1 carries an HDR10 base layer, so it usually looks reasonable even when the Dolby Vision data is ignored. See Profile 5 vs 8.1 on Mac.
How to check your file
Look at the video stream in MediaInfo. dvhe.05 is Profile 5, dvhe.08 is Profile 8. If a Profile 5 file is tinted in IINA, the player is not applying the reshaping.
A player that handles it for you
Stoic supports Dolby Vision Profiles 5 and 8.1 in local files, applies the reshaping frame by frame, and maps the picture to your display’s current HDR headroom. Its inspector shows the profile and a line that reads “RPU reshaping applied”, so you never have to guess. There is nothing to configure. If you love IINA’s openness and plugins, keep it for everything else; the Stoic vs IINA comparison covers where each one fits.
Common questions
Is IINA bad for HDR?
No. IINA is a well-made player. HDR and Dolby Vision simply are not the centre of what it promises, and results depend on mpv’s handling.
Why did IINA not appear in your benchmark?
In our September 2026 run, IINA’s picture did not advance on the test file, so we left it out instead of publishing numbers we could not stand behind.
