Stoic is a video player for Mac. This page describes what the app and this website do and don’t do with your data. It isn’t a template: it describes the actual app and site, and it’s revised when they change.
The app: the short version
Stoic doesn’t need an account and doesn’t collect analytics or telemetry. Your videos, your library and what you watch never leave your Mac. The only data the app sends is what’s needed to check your licence and look for updates, described below.
What never leaves your Mac
- The video and audio files you open, and anything Stoic reads from them.
- Your library: titles, folders, favourites, watch progress and notes.
- Generated subtitles, thumbnails and transcripts created from your files.
- Crash and recovery information, kept on your Mac to resume a playback session.
Licence activation
When you activate Stoic, and about once a week after that, the app sends our licence service (at api.stoicplayer.com) your licence key, a random install ID created by Stoic (not a hardware identifier), your Mac’s name as set in System Settings, and the app version. We use them to confirm the licence and enforce the three-Mac limit; the Mac’s name is what you see when choosing which Mac to deactivate. We keep a log of activations with a shortened, one-way hash of the connecting IP address to detect abuse. We don’t use any of this for marketing.
Update checks
When Stoic opens, it asks the same service whether a newer version exists. The request carries no data about you, only the app and macOS version that any web request includes.
Features you turn on yourself
- Opening a network URL. If you paste an HTTP(S), HLS, RTSP, RTMP or MMS address into “Open Network URL…”, Stoic connects to that address to play it, as any player would.
- Online subtitle search. If you add your own OpenSubtitles API key and search, Stoic sends a file hash or title to OpenSubtitles. It’s off until you provide a key.
- Casting. Casting to a Chromecast or DLNA device streams the video over your local network, to the device you choose.
On-device intelligence
Where Stoic uses Apple’s on-device models (cleaning up a file name, transcribing speech for subtitles, searching transcripts by meaning), that processing happens on your Mac. Nothing is sent to Apple, to us or anywhere else for it.
This website
- Purchases. Dodo Payments, our merchant of record, processes payments. Its signed payment confirmation gives us your checkout email, the payment reference and your licence key, which we store to activate your licence, handle support and refunds. We never receive card details.
- Local price display. We use your country or device region to show the price in your currency. No personal data is involved.
- Bug reports and feature suggestions (on /roadmap) store the email and message you submit, so we can follow up.
- Pre-launch waitlist. If you joined the waitlist before launch, we keep that email to tell you about Stoic, and delete it on request.
- Basic usage analytics. We use Vemetric, proxied through this domain, with no cross-site tracking and no third-party cookie. It records page views and on-site events. It never runs on the licence page, which carries your key, and never runs inside the app.
We don’t sell any of this data. See Contact to ask us to delete yours.
